During World War I, the concept of good luck charms became particularly significant among soldiers and their families. As troops faced the uncertainties and dangers of trench warfare, these charms served as tokens of hope, protection, and remembrance. One of the popular types of good luck charms during this period were "fumsup" charms, which were characterized by their positivity and messages of encouragement.

The term "fumsup" was derived from the commonly known expression "thumbs up," signifying approval or good fortune. Soldiers would often carry these charms as personal talismans, believing they could bring them luck and safekeeping during battles. The fumsup charm seen in this listing is no exception! And because it was made in 1914, it was, as stated, likely given to a WWI soldier to be used for those reasons.

Authentic & original WWI fumsup charms are rare, but something makes this charm stand out even more! On the left arm of the charm, the numbers 935 are visible. This means that this charm is made of sterling silver. 93.5% silver, in fact! Most people will instantly recognize a discrepancy: that today’s silver is marked 925, meaning it’s 92.5% silver. Aside from its higher silver content, 935 silver (also known as Argentium) doesn’t tarnish as easily, is more durable, & has a brighter shine than 925 silver.

Along with its silver make up, this fumsup charm is also made with a dark ebony wood head. The arms also can be put in an up or down position. Overall, the charm is in fantastic antique condition and is hard to come by!
